Studying the oldest person in the world shows what has helped her live up to 117
As Maria Branyas Morera died last year At the age of 117 and 168 days she was the oldest known person in the world. Before she died, she asked the doctors to study them.
Dr. Manel Esteller, chairman of the genetics at the School of Medicine at the University of Barcelona, analyzed Branyas’ Health for three years. A study published on Wednesday by ESTULER and a cohort by colleagues online showed that a mixture of factors contributed to the durability of Branyas.
“The conclusion is that the references to extreme longevity are a mixture between what we inherited from our parents and what we do in our lives,” said Esteller. “And this mix depends on the percentage, but it can … half and half.”
Branyas “had very good genes that protect against many disorders, many genetic variants that nobody has seen yet,” said Esteller. She also had “very good habits”. She did not smoke or drank alcohol and had a diet that was rich in fish, olive oil and yogurt – according to the esteller, three yogurt a day.

The yogurt was without added sugar, which fills the intestine with good bacteria, and helped fight the inflammation, said Esteller.
Chronic inflammation is one of the main causes of aging and illness, he said.
“These are good bacteria that offer people an advantage,” added Esteller.
The study found that “whether the dominance of the Bifidobacterium [beneficial gut bacteria] The related genus is completely due to the yogurt diet, which cannot be fully confirmed, since this would be necessary for several years a longitudinal study with sample collection. However, we believe that it is likely that the intake of yogurt has contributed to its well -being and its advanced age by modulating the Darmökosystem. “
Branyas once posted on social media about her love for yogurt and said there was “life” – and it was long. She was born in San Francisco in 1907 and has lived in Spain since she was 8. She survived two world wars and two pandemics and had three children and 13 great -grandchildren.

In addition to a long life, she also lived a healthy -loud cancer, cardiovascular diseases or dementia, says Esteller.
The picture that results from the examination of Branyas shows “shows that an extremely advanced age and poor health are not intrinsically connected and that both processes can be distinguished and disassembled at the molecular level,” says the study published in Cell Reports Medicine.
The researchers said that to carry out the study “Received rehearsals from the subject from four different sources: total peripheral blood, saliva, urine and stool at different times.”
There were also some restrictions, including that aging and extreme longevity are “probably very individual processes”, ie “to draw the generally applicable conclusions from a single subject should be made careful”.
